Purchase of electric buses for the city of Riga

Around 400 buses are involved in passenger transportation on a daily basis, and in the coming years, almost 250 of them will have to be replaced by the new ones that meet the environmental requirements and the current understanding of quality service. Due to the fact that from 2024, green components will become mandatory in public transport, part of the buses will be replaced by electric buses.

The purchase of 35 electric buses planned within the project will not only improve the technical condition of the fleet of vehicles, but will also help to reduce the bus maintenance costs and harmful emissions to the environment.

Project objectives:

  • to reduce the negative impact on the environment and air quality;
  • to improve the experience of travelling in public transport by raising quality standards;
  • to increase the number of public transport users who use environmentally friendly public transport.

Project result: 35 new industrially produced electric buses have been purchased.

It is planned to purchase 35 electric buses with the co-financing of the European Union Cohesion Fund. The total cost of the project is estimated at around 21.3 million euro, with the Cohesion Fund co-financing at 85% of the project’s eligible costs, i.e. 18.1 million euro.

In order to ensure the operation of electric buses, RP SIA “Rīgas satiksme” will implement the construction of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the territory of the bus depot No. 7, at its own expense (Vestienas Street 35, Riga).
